The blind owl looks but she does not see.
Or
Mey-Rin looks at Sebastian and Ciel and chooses not to see.
Mey-Rin loves Mr. Sebastian oh so very much.
He's so tall and handsome, so talented, so capable, yes he is! Even when he scolds her, her heart races impossibly fast because she knows Mr. Sebastian is not a cruel man at all. He's the one who spared her life when he could have easily eliminated her for trying to assassinate his master. He's the one who proposed she put her skills to use at Phantomhive manor. He's the one who suggested the Young Master take her in when she had nowhere else to go. She knows Mr. Sebastian; he's a kind and gentle man, he is. That's why she can't help it; she just loves him so much, she does!
Today, during the Young Master's supper, she stands by the dining table with the rest of the servants, awaiting any orders the little earl might give. The darkly clad butler stands much closer to the Young Master, tending to his every need. Mey-Rin daydreams as she waits. She wonders if Mr. Sebastian is taken with anyone currently. She does not know who the butler meets and interacts with when he goes out on the town with his master, but she likes to imagine he dutifully sticks by the young earl at all times, his eyes never straying. Never gazing lecherously at even the most beautiful maiden. She likes to imagine the only woman he interacts with is the only one in this manor; herself. Blood rushes to her face and she tries to catch the man's eye, to make eye contact with him. To no avail, however, as the dutiful man's dark eyes remain locked on the young boy's form. The Young Master, too, steals constant glances at his butler. Mey-Rin thinks the food Mr. Sebastian has prepared must be so delicious, the boy can't help but look at him with approval and satisfaction. That man is so very talented, yes he is!
During the Young Master's bath time, Mey-Rin decides to bring extra towels and hot water to her master's bathing chamber. She thinks Mr. Sebastian will be ever so grateful for her help. Maybe he will even flash her one of his charming smiles, he will! Maybe he will look at her more... So lost is she in her daydreams, she completely forgets to knock on the door to the Young Master's bath before she enters. The Young Master yelps and slaps his hand to his right eye; he must have been startled witless by Mey-Rin's carelessness, the poor thing. The butler immediately stands from his kneeling position by the tub and strides over to her, quickly taking the towels and water from her and flashing her that lovely smile of his as he thanks her. Mey-Rin stutters an incoherent response and hurries out of the room. Only when she is out in the corridor, can she lean against the wall and clutch her chest, her heart racing. Mr. Sebastian had thanked her! He had even smiled at her, he had! Though, she thinks she saw the corner of his lips twitching in... anger? Annoyance? No, no, she must have startled him as well with her sudden arrival, just like Young Master. Yes, that must be it. Ah, but the master's glistening skin had been flushed an angry red when she entered, hadn't it? Was the water too hot? No, no, Mr. Sebastian would never allow that. Perhaps he'd been kept in the steaming bathing chamber for far too long, his butler insisting on cleaning him thoroughly... He seems to insist on helping his master with many things, things that the boy is well past the age of needing any help with... Such a devoted servant Mr. Sebastian is! Mey-Rin grins and returns to her duties.
When it is time to retire for the night, she passes by Mr. Sebastian in the corridor of the servant's quarters. "Good night, Mey-Rin." he says with that lovely and polite smile of his. She stammers a quick reply and hurries to her room. She stuffs her flushed face against her pillow as she reflects upon the encounter. She thinks about the man's lean figure somehow seeming even taller in the darkness of the night. His long lashes casting stark shadows against his cheekbones in the moonlight. His beautiful dark eyes throwing a... perfunctory glance in her general direction. His polite, insincere smile… Heading in the exact opposite direction of where his bedroom is supposed to be… Mey-Rin rises from her bed and paces around her room. Where could he possibly be heading at this hour? Mr. Sebastian is a proper and decent man. She knows that. He is also a dutiful butler, so very devoted to his master... Then he must be patrolling the manor for any intruders. Yes, that must be it! In that case, Mey-Rin thinks Mr. Sebastian will appreciate some extra help, he will. An extra set of sharp eyes to watch over their little master.
With her newly found determination, Mey-rin leaves her room and heads upstairs. She can see faint shoeprints in the plush carpet. They belong to Mr. Sebastian of course; she knows him very well. But for some reason, they lead straight to the Young Master's chambers... The door is ajar and candlelight leaks onto the carpeted floor of the corridor. What could the butler possibly want with the young boy, who is no doubt fast asleep at this time of the night? She knows it's wrong to eavesdrop but she's done far worse things in her lifetime, and she cannot contain her curiosity any longer so she creeps closer. "Sebastian…" the Young Master's voice, desperate. Worried, she creeps even closer and hears her master's voice again, sounding like he's in unbearable pain. A dark chuckle. Her heart stops. Surely not... She swallows and peeks through the gap in the door. She blanches at the scene she sees before her. Clothes strewn about the floor haphazardly, a bottle of oil knocked over from the bedside table, its contents staining the carpet, and the young master and Mr. Sebastian… Mey-Rin returns to her room as silently as she can manage, a lump in her throat and an ache in her chest. After all...
Mey-Rin had loved Mr. Sebastian oh so very much.
